What is the Bowen Technique?
The Bowen Technique is a very gentle form of bodywork developed in the 1950s and 60s by the
late Tom Bowen.
It is an extremely versatile with many procedures available that can be applied for
different situations depending on your needs.
Ultimately the technique helps the body to balance and re-align itself on many levels.
How Bowen Works
In a Bowen session the practitioner applies light moves to specific places on the body.
Ideally moves are made directly on the skin while the client lies on a couch (always decorously
covered by towels) but the work can be done through light clothing if preferred and if anyone
can't get onto a couch then there are ways of working with a person seated.
The light moves over muscles, tendons and nerves also work on the fascia - a band or sheet
of connective tissue fibres, primarily collagen, that forms beneath the skin to
attach, stabilize, enclose, and separate muscles and other internal organs, so like
drawing a bow over a violin string makes the whole string vibrate a move over the fascia
in one place can have effects elsewhere.
The practitioner leaves the room from time to time to allow the body to process the changes
taking place. By leaving the room even the primitive reptile part of the brain that is always
on the lookout can relax to allow the full benefit.

"Sue Woodriffe has the lightest, kindest touch in her hands and an intuitive measure with which she performs Bowen.
As I write this, I can hardly believe that there was a time when I shuffled through her doors, hardly able to move with
back pain, as her treatment of me has now given me such freedom in movement and put me back in the flow. What a gift she has.
Thank you Sue."

Bowen for Babies and Children
As Bowen is extremely gentle, it is ideal for babies and children. We use specific
procedures known as “Baby Bowen”. Babies and youngsters respond much quicker
than adults to treatment. Treatment is very gentle and babies and young children generally
find the experience very relaxing and will often fall asleep.
Bowen for Mum
Bowen has an excellent track record for treating the side effects of pregnancy such as
back pain. The technique may also help the mother recover after the birth and in dealing
with the demands on her body that having a new baby brings.
